Bursitis pain is caused when the bursae around the joints become inflamed. Bursae are the small, fluid-fills sacs that cushion the muscles, bones, and tendons near joints in the body.
Bursitis occurs in joints that perform frequent, repetitive motion, such as the hip, shoulder, elbow, knee, and heel. Patients reports pain, aches, and stiffness at the joint site as the primary symptom, which is sometimes accompanied by redness and swelling.
Although bursitis is usually a mild condition that can be treated with rest and over-the-counter pain relievers, severe cases can occur where the patient experiences acute pain at the joint site. Blood tests and fluid samples can be used to determine if the site has become infected or if other conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis are the cause.
If you experience any of the following symptoms, you should consult your doctor:
- Pain lasting longer than two weeks
- Disabling joint pain
- Sharp or shooting pain
- Excessive swelling, redness, bruising, or rash around the joint
